Wema Uganda is an education and human development ecosystem dedicated to strengthening the systems that enable children, youth, educators, and communities to thrive.
Wema Uganda is an education and human development ecosystem dedicated to strengthening the systems that enable children, youth, educators, and communities to thrive. The organisation understands education as a lifelong process that extends beyond formal schooling, encompassing formal education within schools, non-formal and community learning, vocational and skills development, and informal learning within families and communities.
Through this holistic perspective, Wema Uganda works to create integrated pathways that support human development across different stages of life.
The name Wema, meaning kindness and compassion, reflects the organisation’s belief that strengthening systems is not only a technical endeavour but also a moral commitment to human dignity. Wema therefore approaches systems change with a deep commitment to creating environments where individuals feel supported, valued, and empowered to realise their full potential.
Across its initiatives, Wema Uganda cultivates learning environments that are inclusive, nurturing, and responsive to the needs of learners and communities. Compassion is embedded in educator development, youth empowerment, community engagement, and evidence-driven learning.

Wema was founded by Gillian Patricia Atuheire, a seasoned educator and systems practitioner with over 15 years of experience spanning classrooms, school leadership, community engagement, and national policy spaces in Uganda.
Her career has been defined by sustained, hands-on engagement with teachers, learners, families, and government institutions—providing deep, practical insight into how education policies translate (or fail to translate) into meaningful classroom practice and learner outcomes.

"Wema was established as a platform to translate lived experience into lasting, system-level change—bridging the gap between policy intent and classroom reality. Our work contributes to national reform while influencing broader continental conversations on education quality, mental wellbeing, and equitable investment in human capital."
